“When coins met banknotes” - Corfu

The educational program titled “When coins met banknotes” is under way at the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank in Corfu.

The study of coin iconography has been an important source of information already from antiquity, as that information is directly linked to the history of the issuing authority. During the history of the Modern Greek State, banknotes followed the same principles and it is noteworthy that, during particular periods of time, their iconography included the depiction of one or more ancient coins, in a prominent place.

The educational program “When coins met banknotes” was designed to get children acquainted with the medium of transaction from antiquity to this day and teach them the iconography of coins.

By means of discussion and group games, children sharpen their observation skills, they seek out important banknotes among the Museum exhibits, they discover the ancient coins hidden in these banknotes and become acquainted with gods, legends and leaders of the ancient world.

A booklet has been designed especially for this Program.
