GREEK COLONISATION: New Data, Current Approaches

SCIENTIFIC MEETING

The Scientific Meeting “Greek Colonisation: New Data, Current Approaches” was successfully held on Friday 6 February 2015 at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. The Meeting was organised by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki in the context of the exhibition “The Europe of Greece: Colonies and Coins from the Alpha Bank Collection”.

The scientific interest in the Greek Colonisation together with the enthusiastic response of the public to the Exhibition led to the organisation of the Scientific Meeting, which aimed both to present new data and promote academic dialogue on the relevant issues.

Fifteen historians and archaeologists (excavators, museum directors, university professors) from Greece, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, and Australia, who are engaged with the study of the Greek Colonisation, participated in the Meeting and presented new data from the area of their excavation works as well as syntheses of various aspects of this phenomenon.

The Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari, made an announcement entitled “Images of the Sea on the Coins of Ancient Greek Colonies”, and presented twenty five coins from the Bank’s Collection inspired by sea themes.
