Discover Ancient Coinage

Temporary Exhibition at the “Pedagogiki” Elementary School Museum Area

“Discover ancient coinage”, an exhibition organised by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, was on display at the Museum Area of the “Pedagogiki” Elementary School, in Piraeus.

The exhibition took students on a tour through the history of Coinage, from the time of its invention (late 7th/early 6th century BC) through the end of the Hellenistic era (2nd century BC).

The introductory section covered the Precursors of Coins, the talent and obeloi. It was followed by the Invention of the Coin, the Bimetallism and the First Coins of Greece sections. The ancient world’s two Strong Coins, namely the Athenian tetradrachms (Athenian owls) and the tetradrachms of Alexander the Great (Alexandrian tetradrachms), were then presented, followed by the Iconography of ancient coins, with themes inspired by religion, mythology, the flora and the fauna. The Exhibition ended with some of antiquity’s major currencies.

Overall, 47 copies of ancient coins from the Alpha Bank Collection were on display.

The Exhibition was accompanied by a three-fold information booklet.
