Alexander the Great. From Macedonia to the Edge of the World
7.5.2010-31.10.2010

The temporary exhibition “ALEXANDER THE GREAT: FROM MACEDONIA TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD”, organized by Alpha Bank in collaboration with the 12th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities at the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina, has come to an end.

The exhibition presented 220 gold, silver and bronze coins from Macedonia and the Hellenistic kingdoms established following the death of Alexander, among which were included a wealth of Alexandrian tetradrachms, as well as the imitations issued that constitute solid proof of the influence of his coins. All the coins belong to the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection. In addition, the exhibition presented numismatic issues bearing the deified portrait of Alexander, the first great mortal depicted on the coins.

It should be mentioned that the overall attendance reached 9.550 visitors.

The exhibition was accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue-album in Greek and English, with explanatory texts and photographs of the coins.

In the context of the exhibition, several parallel events took place at Ioannina. In particular:

- Guided tours for schools were organized. The children were given the opportunity to view the exhibition, guided by archaeologists, and to become acquainted with the history and the coins of Alexander the Great.

- On Friday 24 September, a large number of the Personnel of the Alpha Bank Branches in the Ioannina area were offered a guided tour.

- On Saturday 25 September 2010 an educational event entitled “A Day at an Ancient Mint” was realized on the premises of the Museum. The program was mainly addressed to children, which painted, made up and “struck” their own coins using replicas of ancient dies.
